Duplex 311 is located near 3000 Sumner St, Lincoln, Nebraska. Prior to the initial design, the site was studied through many factors. The duplex responds to the site through solar, wind, and view considerations. The building is a two to three story duplex. The aesthetic is inspired by the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. The two units are represented from the exterior and interior through differing material allocation as well as overall spatial sequencing. These spaces are utilized the frame the surrounding context; the park is the main attraction near the building, allowing park-goers to view the house, and tenants to view the park. Duplex 311 is efficient, but most importantly, designed.
Identity. A main concept of the design was to answer the question “Is the identity of residential architecture important to the occupant?” To answer this, the building has two independent faces that belong to the individual tenants. This allows both parties to enjoy the experience of a separated home, while still being connected. Essay “Architecture and Identity” by Peter Herrle and Erik Wegerhoff also express how various spaces inside the building also reflect identity. Therefore, yes, identity is crucial to occupants of residential architecture, especially that of the Midwest. This is also supported by the theory of Feng Shuai.

The adjacent dwelling unit was a preluding project that would in turn lead into the final duplex design. This project, we had the opportunity to work with a client and her needs to come up with a final design solution. The design is based on "Tenjiku" architecture as requested by the client with a modern tie.
